Save-a-Lot Shopping Tips
Shopping at Save-a-lot can be tricky. Many of the pre-packaged and convenience foods are just as expensive or perhaps a bit cheaper than other grocery stores. You can save quite a bit on staples at Save-a-lot. Basic items like salt, baking soda, baking powder, produce, rice, and beans are examples of these items.
Save-a-lot also has name brand items and these items when on sale, and combined with coupons can provide great savings!
Examples:
Save-a-lot recently had Butterball Turkey Bacon on sale for $1.00 per pack. I had $.65 off 1 pack coupons, making a pack of turkey bacon only $.35! I bought 6 packs and put them in the big freezer. I have some more $.65 coupons and I have fingers crossed for another great deal as we're down to one pack.
Fresh Express salad mix on sale for $1.00, I had a $1.00 coupon. FREE salad mix!
Cheese Nips on sale for $1.00, I had a $1.00 off 2 coupon. .50 boxes of Cheese Nips.
Save-a-lot has a Smart Shoppers Club as well. You can sign up HERE to receive the weekly sales, coupons, and discounts. When you sign up, you will receive the opportunity to print a $5.00 off your $25.00 purchase which can be combined with other coupons!
Recently, I started getting coupon offers from Save-a-lot as well. These are good for store brand products or free items when you spend a certain amount.
Current notable deals include:
$.88 Peaches, Plums, and Nectarines
$.88 Bartlett Pears
$.88 Sweet Jumbo Onions
$.88 Roma Tomatoes
$.88lb. Chicken Thighs and Drumsticks
It is important to note that while Save-a-lot does accept coupons, they do NOT double.

2 Johnsonville Breakfast Sausage Links - On Manager's markdown for $1.89
I had no coupons but still snagged the sausage for that price
Final Price: $3.78
Bartlett Pears and Bananas - $3.77
Used 2 $1.50 off Fresh Fruit when you buy 2 Kellogg's Cereal coupons (the cereal I purchased above)
Final Price: $.77
3 Gallons of Milk - On markdown for $1.60 a gallon = $4.80
Used 2 $2.00 off milk when you buy 2 Eggo Waffles coupons (the Eggos I purchased above)
Final Price: $.80 or $.27 per gallon!!
Aunt Jemima Homestyle Waffles - On Closeout for $1.63
Used 1 $1.00/1 Aunt Jemima product coupon
Final Price: $.63
Shopping Total: $24.36 ($19.36 once I get my $5.00 rebate gift card from Kellogg's) - Receipt total shows a savings of 60%. That calculation does not take into account manager's specials so the milk and breakfast sausage savings are not included. The total would have been at least $70.00, which would be savings of more like 70%!!

Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free (or close to it)
Milk! Most of us with families go through a LOT of milk and that can add up. Coupons for milk are rare and it normally runs around $2.50 a gallon. Here is a great way to save!
I have found that my Kroger discounts milk early on Thursday and Friday mornings. Generally, the half gallons get marked down the most. Typically around .99 per half gallon but I often see them as low as .33 per half gallon. I like half gallons because you can freeze them without having to remove any milk (you must remove some milk from gallons before freezing or they will burst).
You can't necessarily be picky about what variety of milk you will buy. Sometimes whole, 2%, 1%, and skim are all on sale and sometimes only one variety is on sale. I usually take what I can get if it is as low as .33 a half gallon (which for you math challenged folk out there is .66 a gallon!!!).
Last time it went down to .33 a gallon, I bought 15 half gallons. Still made sure to leave some for other deal finders too! I still have it in my freezer but I'm down to about 2 1/2 gallons so I'll be on the lookout for more markdowns this week.
If you have never frozen milk before, here are some things to be aware of:
1. It will look FUNKY when you freeze it. Don't worry, it does separate some but once it defrosts and you give it a good shake it will come back together and be as nice and white as before.
2. Keep a sharpie by the freezer and mark the date that you pulled it out so you know you have about 5 - 7 days to use it from THAT date. I actually do this will all foods I pull out of the freezer.
3. If it ever tastes watery, shake it. I am in the habit of shaking it whenever I pull it out.
Other dairy items can be frozen as well. I regularly freeze yogurt, cheese, and sour cream. Sour cream will not return to its normal state so you can not use it for toppings or dips. It is fine in baking and cooking. Yogurt does just fine. Cheese does fine but it doesn't return exactly to the way it was. It will get crumbly so you won't be able to slice it for parties but it will do fine melted or crumbled over salads.
Part of being able to save extreme amounts is being able to stock up on items when they are at the cheapest. I highly recommend buying an extra freezer for the garage or basement. We bought ours at a use appliance store for $100 and in a few short months it had already earned its value.

How many newspapers should I buy?
Many people never think to buy more than one Sunday newspaper every week, but buying more can mean the difference between minor and extreme savings. A good standard is to buy one paper for every member of your household. I have 4 people in my household but I buy 6 papers most weeks. In Terre Haute, we get our local paper as well as the Indianapolis and Chicago paper. The Chicago paper rarely carries coupons inside to my dismay. I would buy all Indianapolis papers but the Indianapolis paper does not carry the Red Plum insert. The Indianapolis paper DOES carry a bigger variety of coupons in their SmartSource insert. I want those extra coupons that we don't get in our Terre Haute Smartsource insert. Our Terre Haute paper DOES carry the RedPlum insert though so I buy a mixture of both to get the RedPlum coupons as well as a large selection of the coupons Smartsource has to offer.
I buy 3 Indianapolis Sunday Stars and 3 Terre Haute Sunday Tribune-Stars most weeks
If there is a large number of really great coupons that I want to get my hands on, I buy more. This past Sunday we had a Smartsource, Redplum, AND a General Mills insert. I bought 8 newspapers.
This may seem counterproductive to SAVING money but those savings will come back to you, I promise.
Say you REALLY love Tide and there is a $2.00 off 1 Tide product in the paper. You would like more of just that one coupon but don't want to spend the $1.75 per paper to get that coupon. Consider a clipping service. They clip the coupons and you buy them at a small handling fee that covers their time to clip them.
I use CouponDede but TheCouponClippers is another popular clipping service.
What do you DO with all these coupons? Well, you get a coupon binder of course. Stay tuned for an informative and entertaining film on organizing your coupons. Your coupon binder will become one of your children (in some cases, maybe your favorite child...your family dynamic is really none of my business).

Current Kroger Catalina Deals
Catalinas (also known as CATS or Your Bucks) dispense from a printer at the end of your transaction when you shop at Kroger, Baesler's, and Walgreens. Other stores use these too but around our area those are the spots to snag them. They can spit out anything from advertisements to money off your next shopping order. Money off your next shopping order is what you want! Keeping track of current offers and combining these offers with sales and coupons can make items free or near free!
Coupon Network has printable coupons as well as Your Bucks offers listed on their site. I *always* print out the Your Bucks offer and take it with me. There are times when a Catalina does not print out so I use the print out to prove that the offer is valid for Kroger since not all Catalina's are offered at all stores.
You generally only receive 1 catalina per offer so if you want more, be sure to split your catalina items into multiple transactions. Always be sure to be courteous to the cashier and people behind you. Be prepared to get back in line to allow others to go ahead so you don't hold anyone up.

Kroger Deal of the Day
Kroger is having its cartbuster savings event and part of this is a deal of the day through August 16th. Be sure to check everyday for a high value digital coupon to add to your card. Keep in mind digital coupons do not double so if you have a paper coupon with a higher value, don't bother. I generally don't add digital coupons unless they are $1 or over since our Kroger stores only double up to .50.
Click here to check out today's deal of the day, .50 off Progresso soup. Progresso is currently on sale for $1.33, making one can .83.
